English and Communication Major
I chose Heidelberg because it was the place that felt like home. Choosing Heidelberg meant choosing the place where I knew not only could I be myself, but I would be encouraged to grow and expand beyond my current understanding of myself.
I majored in English and Communication; both fields of study offer an opportunity to understand how we share our stories with one another and how to effectively reach others from different disciplines, backgrounds, and cultures to share our message.
A major challenge I encountered while at Heidelberg was feeling lonely during the COVID era. and I handled it by joining different groups and campus organizations that aligned with my interests and values, filled with people who welcomed me with open arms.
The best opportunity I discovered at Heidelberg was working with mentors. As a sophomore, I had the opportunity to present at a national conference in a room full of graduate and post-graduate scholars. This was due to Dr. Julie O'Reilly taking me under her wing and helping me perfect my research and find the courage to share it with others.
Outside of the classroom, I was involved in Greek life, campus publications, advocacy groups, social clubs
The thing I'm most proud of about My Heidelberg accomplishments is that my endeavors to create a better environment for all community members has had a tangible impact on other students, faculty members, and staff members and I can culturally see that the work I have done reflected in the campus community.
One faculty or staff mentor or advisor who impacted my ‘Berg experience is Dr. Julie O’Reilly because of her recognition of my potential and constant encouragement to reach my fullest self and perform to the best of my abilities.
My advice to new freshman me would be go to every event, visit every office, seek out every resource. You never know who you will meet or what you will learn, and you may need to know those things down the line.
My favorite Heidelberg memory is participating in the Homecoming showcase and performing tarot card readings for the audience, but using a Cards Against Humanity deck instead and coincidentally pulling a card about Jamie Lee Curtis when doing the reading for a Jaime. The whole Homecoming Week was a blast!
My plans after graduation are to earn my master's in Media and Communication from Bowling Green State University.
