Accounting Major
I chose Heidelberg because of the small class sizes that allowed me to create amazing relationships with my classmates and professors. The PlusOneAdvantage® program for Heidelberg University's MBA gives me the opportunity to obtain a quality education while being able to balance my life outside of the classroom.
I majored in accounting because when I was in high school, I signed up for an "Accounting 101" class to figure out what I wanted to study in college. After participating in some classes and homework assignments, I fell in love with the concepts and work I had to do which helped me realize I want to be an accountant after I graduate college.
A major challenge I encountered while at Heidelberg was taking 18 credit hours in one semester so I could graduate a year early. I handled it by staying organized and balancing everything I had going on inside and outside the classroom.
The best opportunity I discovered at Heidelberg was participating in their yearly-held event, "Meet the Firms Night." I participated in this event for two years. Because of this event, I was able to connect with numerous accounting firms and got chosen to participate in CliftonLarsonAllen's summer internship program in 2023. After this internship, other accounting firms have reached out to me wanting to offer me full-time positions for their company after I obtain my MBA.
Outside of the classroom, I was involved in Heidelberg's track and field team and The Dean Student Advisory Board.
The thing I'm most proud of about my Heidelberg accomplishments is getting first place in women's javelin at The Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Track Meet in 2023.
One faculty or staff mentor or advisor who impacted my 'Berg experience is Professor Scott Miller. Immediately, when I had my first class with him, he pushed me and encouraged me to go above and beyond to help me grow as a student and as a future accountant. Toward the end of my first semester-long class with Professor Miller, he pulled me aside and said thoughtful, encouraging words about my personality and hard work that I put into my academics. Outside of the classroom, Professor Miller has done so much for me such as helping me create a resumé, having late-night study and tutoring sessions, and even coming to some of my track meets to show support! Professor Miller has also given in-person recommendations to accounting firms I was interested in working for during their summer internship programs. I am also very grateful that I had Professor Miller as my academic advisor before he left Heidelberg. Not only did he help me figure out what classes I had to take to stay on track, but he also used those meetings as a time to check on me and to make sure everything was going good. Professor Miller was always available and willing to drop anything he was doing to help me out. Furthermore, as an advisor, Professor Miller helped me realize that I was able to obtain my bachelor's degree in accounting in 3 years, rather than 4 years. Professor Miller uncovering this amazing accomplishment allowed doors to open to me that I never thought I would come across. I owe my entire academic career to Professor Miller and I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for him and his amazing guidance.
My advice to new freshman me would be enjoy the little things. From the late-night homework sessions, to the Saturday football games, you are only at Heidelberg for a quick, short amount of time, so don't take it for granted!
My favorite Heidelberg memory is going to Heidelberg's track and field trip to Myrtle Beach. I made some of my best memories at that trip and have gotten closer to my teammates whom I consider one of my best friends.
My plans after graduation are to get my MBA at Heidelberg and to hopefully make a decision soon on which company I would like to be an accountant for.
